Triathlon competition in Nakajima started in 1986. This is the biggest annual event for everyone in the town and for the athletes from all over Japan. Residents participate in volunteering work to support the attendance and even they open up their door for people from other cities and let them stay their houses. This competition is very important part of bringing much life into this island town. |

Children from Tokyo or other big cities can enjoy the unlimited fun of staying at a rural village in Nakajima, not only for one day or for summer season but for 6 months or even for a year! The program called "Studying Abroad by the Seaside" started in 1988 to give children in big cities a chance to enjoy and learn about the nature and the islanders' life-styles by the seaside in Nakajima. This was the first program introduced in Japan, and the town expects more people to come and stay in Nakajima. |
People of Nakajima formed a drum band called Nakajima Suigun Daiko in 1990 to inherit the spirit of Suigun. It is believed that Suigun used to play the battle music before they start fighting. Now they play traditional musical instruments not to fight a battle, of course, but to recall our history and wish for the prosperity of our town. |

We have ferries and express boats which play an important role in our daily lives. I take boats to come to my English school. When the weather is bad, I have to cancel my classes. |
We have 3 ports in our town: |
